General

  1. What can I do with my ebook?
  2. In addition to zooming in and out, reading, and downloading, ebooks are fully searchable and can be annotated, bookmarked, and highlighted by users. Users can search for terms in a single book, across their purchased titles, or across the full site. Users can also print a limited number of pages for select titles.
  3. What can I do with ebook widgets?
  4. Widgets make reviewing and referencing our ebooks easy. They enable you to look at cover art, tables of contents, and ViewInside preview pages. They may also offer full content search. You can embed them in your own website or blog; email them to friends; or share them on such social networks as Myspace, Facebook, Shelfari, LibraryThing, Digg, or Delicious.

  5. What is Adobe Digital Editions?
  6. Adobe® Digital Editions software offers an engaging way to view and manage ebooks and other digital publications. It can be used to download, purchase, organize and annotate digital content, and supports industry-standard ebook formats, including PDF and EPUB. To download Adobe Digital Editions for free, please click here.
  7. What is the return policy on an ebook?
  8.  Due to the nature of the item, and unlike printed versions of a book, ebooks cannot be returned. Once the ebook is purchased, the sale is considered to be complete and final.
  9. What are the differences among ViewInside, iOffline and the Adobe Digital Editions ebook reader?
  10. ViewInside offers users the opportunity to sample ebook content online without committing to a purchase. Readers can explore a limited number of pages of each title, search within the content, and change viewing options.
Users who purchase an ebook receive offline access to the complete text using either iOffline or Adobe Digital Editions, depending on the digital rights management (DRM) requirements of the publisher. In both readers, users can bookmark, make notes, and highlight.
  11. How soon am I charged for my purchase?
  12. A charge will immediately appear on your bank statement under the name Impelsys for the purchase of your ebook(s).

  13. Does Adobe Digital Editions work on a PC or a Mac?
  14. Yes, Adobe Digital Editions works on both PCs and Macs.
  15. Where can I buy a print copy of the books?
  16. On each ebook’s product page, there is a link either to the publisher’s own print catalog and/or to the Harvard Book Store’s Espresso Book Machine (EBM). If linked to the EBM page, it means the publisher has opted to make their books available using print-on-demand (POD).
  17. What is an ebook?
  18. An ebook is an electronic version of a book. ProtoBooks allows users to read publications on any screen with a browser that supports Flash. Some of our titles are also available for download-only; these are legible on any device that supports Adobe Digital Editions. Our ebooks have the look of print books, with the layout, figures and images intact. Users can opt to see one page at a time or two-page spreads, and can zoom in for close study. Users can read ebooks online or download them to computers for offline reading.
  19. What are the technical requirements for ProtoBooks?

    Offline viewing:
ProtoBooks offers two options for offline viewing, depending on whether the publisher wants their ebooks available for download only, or for download as well as online viewing. This is a choice each publisher makes, and has to do with the digital rights management (DRM) of their content.

    Download only (PC or Mac):
ebooks that are available for download only list “eBook (DRM)” or “PDF (DRM)” as the format on their product pages. To view ebooks with DRM, you must first download Adobe Digital Editions (free) prior to downloading your ebook.

Download and Online (PC or Mac):
Go to the My Bookshelf page and click on the link to download iOffline. Follow the prompts to download and install the iOffline Reader and the Adobe AIR program. Then when you log in to ProtoBooks, all of your titles will be available to you for offline viewing.
  21. Do you offer bundled print and ebook content, or institutional pricing on ebooks?
  22. If you are interested in bundled or a multi-copy ebook purchase and discount for your institution, please email us and we'll work with you.

  1. How do I add bookmarks and my personal notes throughout my ebook?
  2. To bookmark an entire page, navigate to it and click the bookmark icon that appears on the right-hand side of the top panel. This will open a small window which will allow you to input and save your personal notes.

    In Adobe Digital Editions:

You can also bookmark a specific phrase on a page: do this simply by highlighting the text you’d like to bookmark, and clicking the bookmark icon in the top panel.

To view all your bookmarks in a single list, click the bookmark icon that appears in the left-hand navigation bar, above the book’s title and cover image.

    Online Viewing and iOffline Reader:

To make a note, click on the notes icon (a little pencil) that appears in the top panel immediately to the right of the bookmark icon. Clicking this icon presents a dropdown menu with three options: "Add a note," "Show all notes," and "Hide all notes."

    • Add a Note: this turns your cursor into a yellow post-it note icon. Click on the spot in the prose where you would like the note to reside. This opens a popup window where you can enter a Title and a Description for your note. Be sure to click “Save” at the bottom when you’re finished.
    • Show All Notes: By clicking this, you are making all the yellow post-it note icons you’ve placed throughout the ebook visible to you.
    • Hide All Notes: By clicking this, you are making all the yellow post-it note icons throughout the book invisible. Note: you are not deleting your notes, you are only hiding them.

To highlight text, click the i-beam or insert cursor icon that appears in the top panel immediately to the right of the notes icon. This will turn your cursor into an i-beam, or insert cursor. Then simply highlight the text.

To download your ebook, login to your ProtoBooks account and click “Bookshelf” on the upper right. This will bring you to a page listing all the ebooks you have purchased so far.

Below the description of each ebook, there is either a “Download PDF” or “Download eBook” link. “PDF” and “eBook” refer to the file format in which your ebook appears.

    • Online: ebooks available for online viewing are described as such in the file format column on their product pages. Please see the technical requirements listed above to ensure ease of accessibility.

    • Online/Offline: Any ebook that you can view online can also be downloaded and viewed offline on your computer via the iOffline Reader, and any comments, bookmarks or annotations you make will automatically sync between the on- and offline versions once you are online again. To do this, go to the My Bookshelf page and click on the link to download iOffline. Follow the prompts to download and install the iOffline Reader and the Adobe AIR program.
